Abstract Metaphor is discussed in terms of contemporary theories as well as theories which are both classic and ancient. The crux
of the matter is that metaphor is seen on one hand subject to interpretation. On the other hand, metaphor is what its author means it to be. The paradox-that
metaphor can both be interpretative and decisive-arises after reviewing theories of several authors. Black and Debatin are two theorists discussed.
What is metaphor? OConnor (1996) considers it as being the most common figure of speech. It is defined as follows: "A metaphor takes the language normally used for
one thing and applies it to something else" (1996, p.211). Other authors define metaphor only in respect to its relationship with simile. For example, a simile brings out a
point of likeness between two distinct items and usually includes the word "like" or "as" (Temple, 1978). A metaphor, on the other hand is a condensed form of simile, or
the simile without the use of the words "like" or "as" (1978). Both are comparisons but most young students are taught that the differences are important. In some ways they
are as metaphor brightens speech where simile is not as powerful. Her "lips were cherries" is more powerful than "her lips were like cherries." Metaphor is more effective in poetry
