Precontact Mayan civilization was one of the more impressive in the world in terms of its social, economic, cultural and technological development. The Mayan people that existed in Mexico and the Yucatan region of Central America prior to the arrival of European peoples to their lands are remembered for their huge ceremonial grounds and elaborately adorned pyramids. They had many more accomplishments, however, which are equally reflective of the level of their development. The Mayan calendar, for example, reflects the Mayas knowledge of the constellations and astronomical phenomena. The people the Spanish encountered in Yucatan were very much a reflection of their societal structure, a structure which had been in place well before the arrival of Europeans to the "New World". Centralized areas such as Copan (a major trade center of the Maya that dates to 300 A.D. to 900 A.D.), in particular, had a tremendous influence on the surrounding areas and peoples and they each were extremely important from a social, economic, cultural and technological development standpoint (Brady, 1995). Current anthropological theory holds that there was little social stratification in precontact Mayan culture (Brady, 1995). There appears to be little differentiation in individual wealth levels as can be determined from examining burials (Brady, 1995). This does not mean, however, that the material culture of the Mayan was drab. It was just the opposite, the site was filled with a multitude of arts and crafts each of superb craftsmanship and beauty.
