Recent human behavior genetic research has suggested that while there is no single criminal gene, there are genes related to traits like aggression and violence. These trait genes would predispose
an individual to committing violent crimes. Genetic researchers are careful to state that an individual does not become a violent criminal simply because of these trait genes. There are many
other factors involved. Some studies have revealed that crime tends to run in families. In other words, if a parent is a violent criminal, their children may also become violent
criminals. This outcome would relate more to children being exposed and raised in a specific lifestyle (Burfeind and Bartusch, 2011). The argument becomes confused because geneticists know that certain
traits are genetically transmitted and psychologists know that being raised in certain environments makes a child more likely to perform certain behaviors. A number of genes have been linked to
certain undesirable traits. The DAT1, DRD2 and MAOA genes have been correlated with aggression and other antisocial behaviors (Burfeind and Bartusch, 2011). Some 5-HT genes have been linked to ADD,
ADHD, conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. An enzyme, MAOA is involved with neurotransmitters in the brain and has also been linked to criminal-type behaviors (Pieri and Levitt, 2008).
