discovered were 17 counts of robbery, 2 counts of aggravated assault, 3 counts of burglary, 3 counts of motor vehicle theft, and 35 counts of drug offenses. Sociologists might interpret
the data differently dependent on which theoretical perspective they are coming from. In order to discern these differences, several perspectives will be explored. A pathological perspective would
entail looking at the data from the perspective of pathology or disease. What stands out here is that there had been many drug offenses, suggesting that alcoholism and drug addiction
is a problem and perhaps is responsible for some of the other crime. There is no criteria for each but it is plausible that the rapes might have been date-rapes
or at least alcohol related. For hard core addicts, robberies are often a way to access quick cash and the other crimes such as burglary and motor vehicle theft all
point to an illegal drug subculture. That is one perspective. The functionalism school is a primary branch of the social sciences and helps to explain parts of society in terms
of functions they perform (McLeish, 1993). Here, to an extent, crime performs a function. In this society, there were no murders and only five rapes. There is an absence
of true fear and so the petty crimes, the drug offenses and so forth serve a function in society. The data suggests that the town is relatively quiet but in
order to serve the notion that laws must be enforced, the police must do something. Therefore, they arrest people for petty crimes, using drugs and the like in order to
serve the function of implementing law and order in a relatively benign society. The number of arrests represent attention to detail but really is not indicative of a problematic region.
