taking giant steps backwards. Apocalyptic Cults All of the extremist groups we will discuss find a basis for their stance in religion, but within that framework their belief systems
vary. The Apocalyptic cults believe that the world will end with the Apocalypse-a gigantic battle between the forces of good and evil (Apologetics Index). The good, in the upcoming
struggle, are the cult members and the evil is Satan himself, embodied in the federal government, which is seen as his instrument (Apologetics Index). Thus the Apocalyptic cults expect to
find themselves in an armed struggle against the U.S. government as the world comes to an end (Apologetics Index). These cults tend to view their mission in two ways:
either they want to speed up the Apocalypse, or find a way to survive it (Apologetics Index). They also vary in the degree of danger they pose, with those
that are more passive and believe that "God will punish" or "evil will be punished" much less threatening than those that say "Gods chosen people will punish"-with themselves as the
chosen (Apologetics Index). A cult that is more active and believes that "Gods chosen will punish" may "produce three social-psychological components, referred to as the Lethal Triad, that predispose a
