businesses were being developed and there was considerable involvement in international business as well. But, as with any other time in history, not all people were benefiting from new wealth
and possibilities. And so came with these realities Progressivism which "was rooted in the belief, certainly not shared by all, that man was capable of improving the lot of all
within society" (U-S-History.com [1], 2005). Some of the more specific goals of this particular form of thought are bulleted below: * The desire to remove corruption and undue influence from
government through the taming of bosses and political machines * The effort to include more people more directly in the political process * The conviction that government must
play a role to solve social problems and establish fairness in economic matters (U-S-History.com [1], 2005). From this we can see that Progressivism was something aimed at improving society,
in progressing and making life better for all people, not just the wealthy and not just the powerful. And, as with any particular form of reformation within a system, the
ideals were perhaps grand and a bit idealistic as seen in the following: "Government should promote and, if possible, provide greater democracy, more freedom, a better environment, broader prosperity, better
