part of the world. This paper considers the life and work of Theodor Herzl, the man who is credited with founding Zionism, and why he and his policies are important.
Discussion Theodor Herzl was born in Budapest in 1860 and educated "in the spirit of the German ? Jewish Enlightenment, as a secular Jew" (Isseroff, 2006). Herzl graduated from the
University of Vienna with a degree in law, but rather than practicing, he became a writer (Isseroff, 2006). Although he had been exposed to anti-Semitism at the university, it seems
to have left little impression, and it wasnt until he became aware of the Dreyfus case (the case of a Jew convicted and sent to Devils Island despite the fact
that the government, the church and the police knew absolutely he was innocent) that he understood the depth of the persecution Jews suffered in Europe (Isseroff, 2006). He decided that
Jews needed their own homeland (Isseroff, 2006). When Herzl defined the way he thought about Jews as a people, he also defined Zionism. He believed that "Jews could gain acceptance
in the world only if they stopped being an anomaly among nations. He asserted that scattered Jews are one people. Their plight could be transformed into a positive force by
the establishment of a Jewish state guaranteed in international law - "volkerrechtig" -- with the consent of the great powers" (Isseroff, 2006). This idea, that the Jews are one people,
