come to us through the examination of the title words, pride and prejudice. In the following paper we examine those two themes, while also illustrating how Austen utilized words and
language in getting these themes across. Pride Despite the fact that pride and prejudice go hand in hand in this novel, we discuss the two separately. We
note, in the beginning of the novel, that pride plays an enormous role in this story. We see that pride is perhaps the root, or the foundation, for all prejudice
as well, for with their pride the characters make judgments and assumptions and thus find themselves prejudiced about one thing or another. One author introduces us to the theme
of pride in the following: "As said in the words of Mary at the beginning of the novel, human nature is particularly prone to [pride] (Volume I, Chapter 5)" (Anonymous
