the twenty-fist century begins, it seems that money still means a lot. Yet, there are faint cries that money is not important. Some come from Generation Y as Papa Roach
puts down materiality and equates possession with obsession. Other voices are heard from the religious right, hoping to redirect the present teens to a pure way of looking at things.
While a few rogue voices yell in the background?in part due to spirituality and in part due to frustration with the present economy?much from an earlier generation is lost. Yet,
while the sentiments of the 1960s were heard loud and clear from the likes of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, and the younger generation would accept the idea that money
was not everything, class stratification was ever-present. One could be "like a rolling stone," but they were certainly not like the rest of society. There was still an upper class
looking down on the masses and whatever they were interested in at the time. The point is the upper class never changed, and it seemingly never will. John Updike exemplified
this best in his A&P, a story of a boy who was ignored due to his class status as well as lack of intelligence. Sammy was stigmatized and although he
innocently wanted to be a part of the mainstream, he found that in a little shore town, he could not shake his class position. The prejudice that exists within
this story actually is present in everyday life in most regions. It is not peculiar to the early sixties nor to this story, but rather permeates daily life as sure
