there is certainly much cynicism in the various scenes, the novels each in their own way contain characters that somehow at least search for a way out. They see the
light at the end of the tunnel. Jacob Hersch and Mark Renton from St. Urbains Horseman and Trainspotting respectively each live a nightmare. No matter how hard the protagonists try
to get out of a negative situation, their doubts always haunt them. Jake Hersh is mesmerized by his cousin Joey but in some way cannot see his serious flaws.
For Jake, Joey is a hero. The novel is set during the 1940s and 1950s where in London Jake is on trial. Not guilty himself, he is somewhat obsessional about
the Holocaust. In the time that the novel takes place, the Holocaust is fresh in the minds of many. In the end, one can say that Jake lives comfortably and
is married. His lifestyle is very different from that of the protagonist in Trainspotting. Trainspotting involves heroin addicts. Rents is given a voice in the context of this nonlinear novel
that makes use of a variety of characters. While in the throes of looking for drug fixes, Rents is somewhat hopeful that they can all kick the habit. It is
this hope that perhaps propels him to continue on. It seems as if Rents is walking a tightrope between the life he wants and the life he has. He
does not want to be a heroin addict. This desire to change may be looked at as rare and exemplary. There are similarities and differences when comparing the
works. The thematic elements are strikingly similar. In St. Urbains Horseman, there is a sense of despair, largely due to the thoughts about the Holocaust. How can this be in
