order. In the tale, the protagonist is Genji who happens to be the son of an Emperor. However, his mother is not the Empress but rather, a woman who is
associated with a lower socioeconomic rung. Genji is bright and wants to be known as the Heir Apparent but this can never be. His mother was not of noble
birth and because of that, he will never shake his status. One obvious theme of this intricate work written long ago is social stratification as it focuses on Genji and
the fact that he can never be considered of the upper echelon even due to his partly noble birth. He is after all the son of a commoner as well.
However, in the end, he will get some satisfaction, but the predicament seems to destroy him and he is bitter throughout his life. Genji grows up to have an affair
with his fathers Empress Fujitsubo and she bears Genjis son who they call Reizei. This is an interesting and ironic possibility. To have an affair with ones fathers wife
is one thing, but because of the social stratification inherent in the picture, the actual birthright of this newborn is not the same as it would be had Genjis
father actually fathered the new baby. Yet, this baby takes the throne as it is not revealed who the real father is. In some way, because it is Genjis biological
son who is able to inherit the throne, there is some sort of revenge on a society that will not see Genji himself as an heir. In this way, he
may glean at least some satisfaction by having had a love affair with his fathers wife and bearing a son with her. When this small boy grows up and
