attitude towards love, and finally, examines Macbeth. Discussion There are 36 plays in the canon, which makes examining each one impossible. However certain themes turn up over and over again. Many of the comedies, for instance, turn on mistaken identity or role-playing, as in The Comedy of Errors where two sets of twins raise havoc; or in Twelfth Night, where Viola disguises herself as a boy, only to have Olivia fall in love with her. These two plays have a great deal to say about love, not all of it particularly noble. In Twelfth Night, the twins Sebastian and Viola are separated in a storm; when she disguises herself as a boy its to protect herself in a hostile country. But then she falls in love with Count Orsino, who is in the process of wearing himself out trying to get Olivia to love him. But Olivia in turn has fallen in love with Violas alter ego, "Cesario." At the end, when it is revealed that "Cesario" is a woman and that she loves the Duke, he suddenly gives up all his hopes of marrying Olivia to take Viola as his wife instead. Shakespeare may well be commenting here on the type of love that can so easily change course; it seems frivolous and rather shabby, after all Orsinos protestations of love to Olivia, the about-face is startling. Or perhaps Shakespeare is commenting on the silliness of Orsinos type of love: he spends his days lying around moping, listening to melancholy music and generally making himself miserable. Orsino teeters on the edge of comedy: this is the way teenagers fall in love, all or nothing, life or death. Orsino is a mature man and should Know better.
