Veil there is a sense of good versus evil replete throughout the work as the people decide whether or not they should be swayed by curiosity, or do the right
thing. Young Goodman Brown focuses on a typical Puritanical life but it is also about good and evil. The devil is very much a part of the work and
it seems as if those who are not converted, are doomed. Hawthorne writes to describe one of the characters as having "the instinct that guides mortal man to evil" (Hawthorne
Young Goodman Brown 118-119). In The Birthmark, the good versus evil theme is less obvious. It seems that for example, in this story, there is a grander question. In society
today, people think nothing of going under the knife to better themselves. There are shows demonstrating that plastic surgery can be life changing. But moral questions arise and a good
versus evil debate may ensue. Is it morally justifiable to take physical risks to improve appearance? When examining the three works in respect to symbolism, it does become clear
that there is much going on in each of the stories, all crafted by the same author. The Ministers Black Veil has an intriguing plot concerning a ministers request to
never remove the curious black veil he wears. When he dies, should the congregation remove it? Hawthorne sets up an intriguing problem that hints at religious themes. The minister makes
a statement which means that the people should obey. Yet, the veil is rather symbolic. Should the people be intrigued by the simple piece of cloth? Does the veil separate
Hooper from God or from the congregation? Many questions crop up in respect to religiosity as well as in relation to the walls everyone builds around them. On a daily
