the elite, and upward mobility, he also uses less successful but intriguing characters. Fictional characters are woven into the work as well, as the author explores not only social mobility,
but also matters of life and death. Where an individual goes after death, why people are on the planet in the first place, and other deep questions seem to be
a part of several characters coming to terms with mortality. A student writes that the novel is playful and makes use of names in order to make fun of things,
such as the fact that the New York City jail where Harry Thaw is incarcerated is called The Tombs. The student explains that it is indicative of death and
rebirth and Harry enters and leaves. Of course, The Tombs is not unique to the novel. Still, Doctorow does make use of language in such a way as to make
the reader laugh and be aware that language is something that one can toy with. Many novelists do this in subtle ways. It is also viewed as less obscured in
academic tests as characters are named for example Mr. Cheater and Ms. Sorry. Names can be used that translate to other things. The name Thaw for instance, in this work,
can be indicative of the fact that his character is in a state of flux at times. One can equate this with being thawed as his composition changes minute by
minute. This is true even though the name Thaw was taken from a real individual, as this is a novel of fictional and non-fictional characters. Still, the author chose Thaw
