is filled with numerous possibilities in terms of subject discussions and thematic elements. For example, on one hand it is clearly a story about the tragedy of ignorance in the fantasy concerning the American Dream. And, on the other hand it is clearly a story of a family that seems to lack the skills to communicate feelings of love. With these possibilities in mind the following paper examines several of the themes with Millers play that incite further discussion. The themes discussed are the American Dream, the loss of identity, social and economic forces, and the inability to achieve self-realization. American Dream This is perhaps the most obvious of themes in Millers play. We see Willy Loman as a man who has obviously fallen for the idea of the American Dream and promise, thinking that if he works hard enough, if he sticks to the same profession and company, and essentially gives everything of himself to his work he will become successful and leave something of importance behind. During the time the play was written this new ideal, the materialistic ideal, of the American Dream was very well imbedded into society. No longer was the American Dream something that also included intelligence, depth, compassion, and integrity. It was now a dream that focused primarily on material success and the dream promised that material success and comfort could be found through diligent efforts at work. Willy did not understand that to truly achieve any material success one had to involve themselves in life and love and work in a manner that speaks of intelligence, enlightenment, and depth.
