with many social and racial issues. Told from the perspective of one young girl it follows one summer of growth. In this story one can find many themes. The following
paper examines the themes of coming of age, prejudice, courage and deceptive appearances. Themes: To Kill a Mockingbird As noted, this story covers one summer in the growth
and experience of one young girl, along with her brother and father and other characters. The girls name is Scout and in this summer she learns many things. She learns
about people who are more impoverished than she is, she learns about racism and righteousness. She learns to truly admire and see her father as the noble and honorable man
he is, and she learns that things are not always as they seem. In the other themes to be discussed Scout comes of age, becoming more adult and seeing life
and people through the eyes of one who is no longer a child. At one point in the story Scout sees her father in new light, thinking, "It was
times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived" (Lee Chapter 11). In this
one gets the understanding that bravery and courage had nothing to do with being strong in a violent sense. It had nothing to do with physical bravery but rather with
doing the right thing and throughout this novel Atticus, her father, constantly demonstrates courage in the face of all odds. He faces the people in the community who berate him
for defending a black man, faces people who feel he is a less than adequate father, and essentially follows his own heart and soul, standing up against those who do
