a story of two very different men traveling and struggling during the times of the Great Depression. It is a very sad story but a very realistic story about the
harshness of life and how some people seem fated perhaps to live harshly. The following paper examines the themes of the American Dream, friendship and loneliness as seen in Steinbecks
novel Themes: Steinbecks Of Mice and Men The characters of George and Lennie are the characters that the story revolves around. George is an average man who is
taking care of Lennie, a large and powerful man who is developmentally disabled. They are very different yet something they constantly talk about and dream about is getting their own
little place. At one point George tells another man, "If I was bright, if I was even a little bit smart, Id have my own little place " (Steinbeck 37).
And Lennie often talks with George about the place they will get, believing wholeheartedly in this American Dream where they are "Gonna get a little place an live on the
fatta of the Ian" (Steinbeck 66). In the society that is ravaged by the Great Depression, where land is all but useless but desired, where people are lucky to find
work and survive, this dream is simple and very powerful Throughout the Great Depression people left their land, when it was useless and destroyed, and moved west in many
cases. All they sought, all they wanted, was some land that they could live off of, land where they could set up home and raise food and live simply. This
