that happiness is more important than truth. The first thing that we have to clear up is what we mean by "happiness." When we think of the concept, we usually
think of the things that we do that bring us pleasure individually and that contribute to our sense of fulfillment. Whether that is doing a job we enjoy, getting a
good education, or raising a family isnt important, what is important is that the concept of happiness in our culture is defined by what we, as individuals, need to make
us happy. That idea is less important in Huxleys society, because the individuals of the World State are created, not born; they are manufactured and designed to fulfill certain
roles in the society. The five types of human beings are Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas and Epsilons; in the first chapter of the book, we are given a tour of
the "Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre" and a complete explanation of the way in which human beings are manufactured and conditioned (Huxley). It is a disturbing vision of a
future that is perhaps not too distant. At any rate, each of the classes is slightly less intelligent than the higher one; by the time we get to the Epsilons
they are dull-witted animals fit only for manual labor (Huxley). The idea of manufacturing sentient beings and then using chemicals and other means to artificially stunt their mental and physical
development is revolting. The point is that the vast majority of the citizens of the World State have no concept that any other existence is possible than the one they
are living, so happiness cannot truly be applied to them. However, the Alphas who control the society have been manufactured to be highly intelligent, and at times, they express
