a concentration camp. It is a very vivid and intense story that ensures the reader is truly pulled into the scenario in order to capture the theme of the story.
The theme of the story is survival. The following paper examines this theme. Theme: The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick The reader can readily see the beginning of the
story presented in a manner that speaks very strongly of survival, despite struggle. This is evidenced in the fact that the mother and the elder daughter are clearly very hungry,
if not starving to death. This is a fact that is made even more powerful when one notes that the mothers breasts are dry and the infant, Magda, suckles for
nothing. "There was not enough milk; sometimes Magda sucked air; then she screamed" (Ozick 230). In relationship to Stella she "was ravenous" and Rosa, the mother, "felt light....like...someone who is
already a floating angel" (Ozick 230). In these quotations the reader is well aware, from the beginning of the story, that these three people are starving and yet, somehow,
continue to go on, continue to live. This is further enhanced and made real by the fact that, for some reason, Magda does not die despite the apparent lack of
any sustenance for her. This brings in the thematic element of the shawl in a very powerful way for Magda would suck on the shawl, ultimately, and clearly, only sucking
on her own saliva. But it had a "good flavor" and was called "milk of linen" (Ozick 231). It was "magic" because it seemingly gave her the strength and the
comfort she needed to live. She remained incredibly silent, mute in fact, as long as she had the shawl. It allowed her to survive. And, it was Stella taking that
