actually be argued as many different things. For example, it could be a book that details the fall of society as the new American Dream of wealth and material possessions
takes control over ethics and morality. Or the theme could be of how a fantasy of a remembered love is never quite recaptured and how it can destroy a persons
life in the end. The following paper presents an examination of characters and symbols as they involve the theme concerning this new American Dream that creates people who are other
than they would seem. The Great Gatsby The first character, or important character, that we see is Nick. Nick is the narrator of the story and he is
a very honorable and honest man. He is a simple man and he is intrigued by the society and the people he sees around him this particular summer. He is
not a character who is molded by others or the values or desires of others so much as he is a friend and an observer. He is a man who
follows the old ideals involving the American Dream which involve working hard and being an honorable individual in life and thus being a success.
As such he makes a very good narrator. He also cares about people, which also makes him a reliable narrator. This is good because all we see and
hear and note about the characters in the story come from him and his own perceptions. But, bearing in mind we only see Nick from his narrative the rest of
