The Awakening. Amongst others, the themes of religion and loneliness are found in this story. It is a story that embraces the cruel realties of life as well as the
differences found between ones inner and outer worlds. In Kate Chopins work, Edna is a woman who feels trapped. She is trapped by her husband and a culture
that she sees as expecting too much from her. This is quite a lonely feeling. She has few people to whom she can express her true self. At some points
in the work, the author expresses the concept of loneliness: " ...and she was quite certain she would grow lonely before long and go to join him in New York"
(Chopin 77). In this case, the author writes about loneliness, but by and large, the idea of loneliness is kept beneath the surface. It lingers in Ednas day. At the
same time, the protagonist has a realization that the aloneness is not something just desired but something she needs. The old notion that one dies alone is something that is
realized here. In the end, Edna commits the ultimate act. No one can die with another human being and so, Edna finds the solace of exile in her own death.
Her decision raises challenging questions as opposed to resolutions. Should society allow her to do such a thing? How can it not? It after all, has no control over
this decision and this is an act she can only do alone. The impact of such questions upon a twenty-first century reader really goes to the thought of an over
