where darkness and light exist more strongly in a metaphorical than a literal order" (136). When the harmonious balance between good and evil is disrupted by Macbeths murder of
King Duncan, this alters what was regarded in Shakespeares time as the divine right of kings. As a result of the evil dominance over the natural order, Scotland becomes
awash in civil strife and bloodshed. At the root core of this evil are Lord and Lady Macbeth, whose selfish and single-minded pursuit of ambition blinded their sensibilities and
ultimately cost them their lives. These characters emphasize the primitive evil and selfish tendencies Shakespeare believed existed in all men. Macbeth is the most supernatural of all Shakespeares works,
because the supernatural framework enabled the Bard to probe the dark or evil side of humanity. This is symbolized in the trio of witches, which not only open the
play but are also used to open every scene, which involves an evil or violent act. Their prophecy that Macbeth will one day become king of Scotland is music
to the warriors ears. He is a respected figure in his homeland, but he (and his ever-persistent wife) want more than the title and prestige of being the Thane
of Cawdor. This couple has a selfish appetite for power that can only be satiated by wearing the crowns of King and Queen. Unfortunately, there is already a
