The books title serves as a metaphor because in Amirs homeland of Kabul, Afghanistan, "Fighting kites is like going to war" (Hosseini, 2003, p. 43). Amir is fighting a
war within, and as he struggles to define his character, the author is able to explore the themes of honor, loyalty, and shame. Within the rigid social structure of
Kabul before the entrance of the Taliban, men were expected to be the personifications of honor and loyalty. Amir always wanted to honor his father, lovingly referred to as
Baba, but he had some difficulties in conducting himself honorably at all times. But his friend Hassan, the son of a family servant, had no such difficulties. Those
attributes were ingrained in his character and had become second nature. The novel is an exploration of personal growth, and this trio of themes charts Amirs evolution from selfish
boy to compassionate man. Amir was a privileged youth while Hassan was a working-class boy that saw people for who they were and
was blind to the social status they maintained. For him, honor was not a learned behavior; it was as instinctive as breathing. After hearing one of his friends
stories, Hassan questioned why the hero killed his wife and felt compelled to shed tears when inhaling an onion would have achieved the same result. In his mind, as
