to cultural issues, clearly sees Hurstons work as trivial and lacking in any serious depth concerning the plight of the African American people. However, this work is not necessarily intended
as a social outcry against injustice but a depiction of one womans journey through her life, the life of an African American woman with no education and no chances in
life. The following paper examines Hurstons novel and argues that it is not quaint and trivial with regard to the African American plight, but rather enlightening and educational in its
unique position. Their Eyes Were Watching God Richard Wright is an author whose works generally indicate the subject matter is a fairly educated individual. His characters, namely himself, fight
against injustice and seek their place in society with power connected to their race and culture. Hurstons woman is a woman who is not educated, and she is a woman
who has very limited possibilities in her time and place in society. She seeks her own identity, but that identity is not really associated with race or culture as much
as it is with pure identity based on the unique woman that Janie is. Janies life is one that is likely very realistic as many African Americans only struggled
to find happiness. Not all African Americans were determined to break through into the white peoples world, making a statement and fighting. Many, because they were not educated, and because
