from the novel in which the author describes the lively evenings at Tea Cake and Janies house, in order to answer the question of whether or not Janie achieves freedom
through her mobility; the paper argues that the answer is yes, she does achieve freedom but more importantly, she gains self-knowledge. Discussion The passage under discussion tells us that people
were always at Janie and Tea Cakes house in the evenings, though they mostly stayed outside, gathering around the doorstep in order to hear Tea Cake "pick the box"; and
they talked and told stories; and gambled (Hurston, 1998). Janie has come a long way since the beginning of the book; shes married for the third time, this time to
a man 12 years her junior. But unlike her other husbands, Tea Cake accepts her for who she is, and the two of they have a strong partnership in
which they share the work equally. In this passage, we read that Janie sometimes thought of her life in Eatonville (an all-black community) and wondered what the people there would
think if they saw her; shes wearing overalls, there are a lot of people around, all enjoying themselves, and shooting dice on her floor. But she doesnt feel ashamed
to have such a crowd enjoying themselves in her house; its apparent that she enjoys it. We know because she says that shes sorry for the friends she left
in Eatonville and "scornful of the others" (Hurston, 1998, p. 133). Clearly she is enjoying her life in this house, with Tea Cake, very much. The next line
says, "The men held big arguments here like they used to do on the store porch" (Hurston, 1998, p. 133). That is, there is something of Eatonville here, and
