In a sense, it
could be asserted that the UK has been involved in a war against terrorism since long before the events of September 11th, especially with regard to the ongoing conflict against
the provisional IRAs mainland bombing campaign which continued through the 1970s and 80s. However, it is also the case that the UK took a much more overt and internationally-focused stance
against terrorism after the attacks on the USA in September, and that this has apparently caused some differences of opinion between the British government and the British public regarding the
extent and the way in which the UK should involve itself in the fight against terrorism in general, and bin Ladens operation in particular.
In terms of the way in which the
events of September 11th affected British interests, it would be fair to say that the way in which the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon were carried out made
it clear that any country would be open to attack in the same way, and in this sense, it is true that terrorism of this nature affects the interests of
