surrounding the increasing use of technology in patient care, in the modern health-care environment, do not simply revolve around ways in which the nurse can avoid "losing the patient in the machinery" but also have implications for the changing role of nursing as a profession, and the relationship between health-care staff and patients, especially with regard to holistic models of health care. If one considers, for example, the way in which the nurse was perceived in the early days of the profession, it is apparent that her primary role was nurturing, and to some extant taking charge of domestic duties, rather than taking a high degree of responsibility for patient care. In the modern environment, the nurse works in tandem with the physician rather than in a subordinate role, has a significant amount of personal responsibility for the patients treatment and well-being, and is expected to be competent in the use of whatever technological equipment is available. Whilst this development in professional status obviously acknowledges the important of the nurses function in patient care, it also means that she has to carry a much greater burden of responsibility and knowledge than was previously the case. Even nurses in highly specialised fields are obliged to keep pace with the latest technological developments, and contribute to studies evaluating the usefulness of new equipment. Nurses in more general practice are expected to be familiar with a wide range of technological equipment, and in an environment where staffing is a problem, they may receive only the most basic training in the use of such equipment.
