The use of statistics in accounting practice for
more information on using this paper properly April, 2010 As time goes on, there seems to be a greater prevalence in the use of statistics in
accounting practice (McGurr 60). It therefore stands to reason that accounting students should be taught statistics (McGurr 60). That said, McGurr does not believe that the two disciplines should be
merged (McGurr 60). In other words, there should not be a loss of the differences in the two fields. Rather, accounting and statistics should remain as to distinct disciplines. At
the same time, accounting students would benefit from an education in statistics. On some level, this is common sense. When learning a subject in a certain school or field, there
will be overlap with similar subjects. In regard to this topic, there are many areas where an accounting student would need to know percentages or how to calculate statistical
factors. Statistics allows the accountant to compare and contrast different things as well as to prepare quantitative data for management. McGurr believes that most accounting students will pick up
the techniques of statistics in their studies, but he believes that they will not apply it in practice (McGurr 60). Indeed, that is the problem. The dilemma is that
