The Taming of the Shrew is a somewhat uncharacteristic Shakespearian
drama, in that it relies on the format of a play-within-a-play and the dialogue is based on coarse and bawdy punning rather than the more subtle and delicate humour which
is found in his other plays. The narrative deals with the rituals of marriage and courtship in the sixteenth century, and especially the way in which women were seen within
the general parameters of society as a whole.
Katherines father, Baptista, is eager to marry off both his daughters, not because he wishes to ensure their happiness but primarily because daughters were something of a
drain on the family resources: sons could be expected to work and provide for the family unit, whereas daughters were seen as rather a burden. Katherines sister, Bianca, is a
beautiful and good-tempered woman and Baptista is aware that will have no difficulty in finding her a husband; however, Katherine is strong-willed and disobedient and Baptista understands that he will
have to employ clever strategies in order to persuade someone to marry her. When Hortensio and Gremio are discussing her in I i, they refer to the prospect of marriage
to her as being married to hell and assert that she requires a fellow-devil, rather than a husband.
