Yes, personality does affect cognition and to an extent alcohol does as well, but there are few studies that provide a significant connection. Embretson & Prenovost (2000) note that ability testing focuses on static measures and these are generally seen as inappropriate for evaluating learning potential. In fact, learning processes are viewed in cognitive psychology studies from processing durations and solving tasks at the same time, to the responsiveness of performance and the evaluating of changing conditions (2000). In fact, a variety of subjects are pursued when viewing cognition. So many elements enter cognitive processes from mental illness to retardation to brain function. Other elements--both internal and external--affect cognition. Environmental aspects, stressors, and mere distractions can affect cognitive function. It is no wonder then that personality traits, or alcohol, or a combination of both, can have an effect on impulsive responding during cognitive performance. In order to evaluate this particular assumption--that alcohol and personality traits has an effect on impulsive responding during cognitive performance--cognitive performance under alcohol must be evaluated as well as how cognition is affected in respect to personality. Embretson & Prenovost (2000) provides a study which examines the structure and nature of learning processes and what they measure. One question addressed processing measures that represent different constructs of traditional static ability measures; another looked at learning processes that rely on domains such as personality (2000). It is also important to note that these studies to some extent measure time in terms of cognitive processing (2000).
