In order to investigate the way in
which the Boer wars affected the subsequent development of South Africa, it is necessary to look at the way in which the war involved a number of different groups, its
outcome, and the significant effects which the conflict had on the social and economic structure of the country as a result.
For instance, although the Boer wars are frequently perceived as a conflict between whites - the Transvaal, the Free State
and the British Empire - black people were also involved at all levels of the war and this in itself had a salient effect on the way in which different
ethnic groups interacted in the period following the war. To trace the various political and economic interests which dominated South Africa during this period, it is useful to consider the
background to the wars and the reasons why South Africa was considered as so important from the perspective of eighteenth and nineteenth century expansionism.
