Even the concept of divine right, which established a direct link between God, the king, and the people in European monarchies, fell short of actually deifying the individual himself. However, the ideas and principles on which the ancient Egyptians based religious thought were different, in several ways, from our modern concepts of theology, life, and death. There was no word for religion, in the sense that we would use the term: it was not perceived as a separate social institution. Prayer, healing, magic and the sacred were all regarded as part of the same whole, embodied in the person of the king. Kjeilen (2005) also points out that we cannot refer to Egyptian belief as a religion, since it comprised many different strands of philosophy and praxis, and the importance of different deities and cults varied in different times and places. As Rodin (2007) notes, cosmology was structured in terms of an ongoing struggle between order and chaos, manifested as Maat and Isfet, and ritual was the means by which chaos was staved off and order maintained. Improper behavior, false worship, and failure to perform correct ritual would lead to punishment after death: Budge (1905) comments that many later religions derived their concept of a fiery, demonic hell from the Egyptians portrayal. Funerary art and artifacts give us considerable insight into the way that the Egyptians saw the transition from life to death, and here we see the high regard in which kings were held.
