In order to consider the way in which the concept of time appears as a major theme in Thoreaus Walden, it would be useful for the
student to take first a general overview of the theme as a whole throughout the work. Thoreau looks at time from a number of different perspectives which are, in many
cases, interrelated. For example, whilst one the main points that he makes is that human beings should not waste time, he also makes it clear that the way in which
individuals make good use of time is dependent on external factors such as the seasons.
He describes, for instance, the different kinds of activities which he undertakes in the course
of the year and it is evident that this is a way of managing ones time which needs to be seen in close conjunction with other elements of life such
