In
order to assess how the concept of alienation is relevant to the theories put forward in Karl Marxs Communist Manifesto, it is necessary to establish what Marx understood by alienation,
or estrangement, and the way that these concepts relate to the theories in the Manifesto. Although Marx used both the terms entfremdung (estrangement) and entausserung (alienation) he seems to have
perceived them as effectively interchangeable: estrangement signifies making unfamiliar, alienation, making foreign.
In both cases the basic concept is that of separating the idea of labour from the labourer himself. It is this
division of the worker from his work which underlies much of the theory of the Manifesto. Under capitalism, Marx considered that labour, rather than contributing to the growth and happiness
of the individual, made a greater and greater separation between the two.
Without the pressures of the capitalist system, Marx was of the opinion that work could make a valuable contribution to the labourers
existence, allowing him to affirm and validate himself. Work, he felt, should fulfil the need of the individual and allow him to grow and develop, but this could only be
achieved if the labour was an integral and valuable part of life. Home, for example, should not be separated from work, in the sense that the worker had to leave
