over the course of their lives. This is a subject that is particularly important when it comes to war and extremely obvious in its manifestation during the Vietnam era. Soldiers
came home devastated. Many were drug addicted. Many had seen things that no human being should see. Obviously, war is detrimental, but the loss of control, or that feeling that
one is out of control can seriously impact the individual in society. Tim OBrien (1999) writes about the subject of Vietnam and
of good luck charms. He writes about the things that the soldiers carried. The significance of this observation is that soldiers perhaps felt control over their fate by carrying things
just as anorexics feel control over their environment by not eating. In fact, people do odd things from carrying good luck charms to looking for signs in the universe to
assure themselves that they are on the right track. OBriens (1999) book begins by explaining how Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl in New Jersey (OBrien, 1999). He
carried them in his knapsack at the bottom in a plastic bag (OBrien, 1999). The letters weighed just 10 ounces (OBrien, 1999). One can imagine that carrying letters around are
testaments to the fact that he has a life at home. Vietnam provides a backdrop of chaos. The soldiers were faced with a war that most did not believe in
and they were not cheered when they returned. Many returned in body bags anyway. But carrying around trinkets and letters did help to feel that at least the soldiers were
in part creating their lives and were not victims of fate. There was an ordered life waiting for them when the chaos would be over.
