It would be useful for the student to start by looking at a summary of Freires definition of education and the way in which he sees the function of
schools, and the relationship between teacher and pupil. For instance, Corbett (2001) interprets Freires banking model of education as demonstrating an us and them relationship between the faculty and the
student body. He asserts that the teachers are the ones who have the power in terms of how the curriculum is structured, how credits and grades are allocated, how subjects
are delivered and so on. The students, on the other hand, have to conform to this pattern which has been set for them in order to get the rewards which
they want, namely their credits, grades and degrees.
The student could therefore point out that the educational system as a whole is not one which facilitates an exchange of ideas, but rather
works on the transfer of specific information from one group to another: the students do not have a choice as regards what they learn, or the way in which they
learn it.
