In order to investigate the ethical controversy surrounding the issue of stem cell research,
it is necessary to look firstly at what is involved in such research and why certain aspects of it have given rise to concern within some socio-cultural groups.
Stem cells are those which are capable of continuing to divide indefinitely in culture, and have the capacity
to develop into specialised cells. For instance, the inner cell mass of a blastocyst, which in conjunction with the outer cells gives rise to an embryo under suitable developmental conditions,
consists of stem cells which will eventually form all the different types of cell needed to comprise the human organism. Much of the research into these pluripotent stem cells to
date has been conducted on embryonic cells obtained either from surplus embryos produced in the course of infertility treatment, or from foetal tissue obtained after the termination of pregnancy.
It should be noted that this embryonic tissue is available as a corollary of infertility treatment or abortion,
and embryos are not deliberately engendered for research purposes. One of the objections to stem cell research is that there will develop a market for surplus or aborted embryos, and
