and the Sea." It is the story of one young mans determined spirit and a story about lessons he learns as he grows. The following paper provides a review of
this book, as well as a brief biography of the writer. The Young Man and the Sea Rodman Philbrick was born in 1951 in Boston (Robinson). He was
the oldest of four brothers and was raised on the beach, Rye Beach (Robinson). He graduated from high school in 1969 and then went to college but dropped out in
his second year so he could open a "beer joint" (Robinson). He also tried to do many different types of jobs such as being a carpenter and a boat builder
while also writing novels (Robinson). Many of his novels are for young readers and many of them are about the ocean. His book "The Young Man and the Sea"
has many different characters, with the main character being Samuel "Skiff." There is Samuels mother and Samuels father in the book as well. His mother, recently deceased, was a strong
and caring woman who told Samuel that he should always be honest and that he should never give up. Samuels father is very sad about the death of his wife,
Samuels mother, and becomes a drunk that is very depressed. Samuel is a young man who wants to do what is right and make some money for the family and
help his father and himself survive. There is also a bully that is constantly tormenting Samuel and his name is Tyler. While Tyler torments Samuel another person, Mr. Woodwell,
helps Samuel with his plans. He is a supportive man who is there to help Samuel with repairs to the boat, the Mary Rose, so that Samuel can achieve his
