were writers at approximately the same time in history, around the turn of the 20th century, and both clearly examined, on some level, the nature of relationships. The following paper
examines different elements about the two works, and discusses perceptions of women seen in the works. The Yellow Wallpaper and Laughter and Tears In Gilmans The Yellow Wallpaper
the reader is presented with a story about a woman who is taking a vacation of sorts with her family. It is not really a vacation but rather a break
from their normal routine so that she can get better. She is essentially at the mercy of her husband and what he feels is best for her, and one can
see, in the very beginning, that she does not really believe in his perceptions of her condition: "John is a physician, and perhaps--(I would not say it to a living
soul, of course, but this is dead paper and a great relief to my mind)--perhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster. You see he does not
believe I am sick! And what can one do? If a physician of high standing, and ones own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter
with one but temporary nervous depression--a slight hysterical tendency-- what is one to do?" (Gilman [2]). She then illustrates how her brother is also a doctor and supports what
her husband says about her condition so she complies and takes the medications they have prescribed and perhaps hopes that things will get better. However, the foundation of her "condition"
