she engages in mediation and when she uses management by walking around (MBWA). Discussion The case study says that Wright is responsible for 1000 prisoners, and because that is a
large number and she has limited staff, she asks for help from other departments to take roll call in the evening. When the warden asks her to recommend ways to
move violent inmates from the Special Housing Unit to the recreation area, she turns to her correction officers for suggestions. When she thinks there might be either a race war
or an escape plot brewing, she once again asks her officers to keep an eye on things, and when an inmate comes to her fearing for his safety, she arranges
for him to meet investigators in the library so that the inmate population will be unaware that he is talking to the prison staff. Finally, two of her officers are
having difficulty dealing with each other, and Wright makes a note to ask the harasser if he is having personal problems that reflect in his treatment of his colleague. According
to one source, prison work can be seen as potentially dangerous, but "officers primarily enforce regulations through communications skills and moral authority, attempting to avoid conflict at all costs" (Corrections
officer). "Moral authority" is really more a philosophical concept than a legal one; it is taken to mean that the person who has such authority lives such a life "as
to merit the confidence and trust of other people" (Covey, 2007). That is, Wright has the authority given to her by her position at the prison, but in order to
