airplane. These brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were born to relatively simple parents in a relatively simple time and place. But, they would go on to become legends as they worked
together inventing. The following paper examines the life and work of the Wright brothers. The Wright Brothers "On April 16, 1867, Milton and Susan Wright welcomed their third
child into their household near Millville, Indiana" (The Henry Ford). This child was Wilbur and four years later, in 1871, Orville would be born (The Henry Ford). Their father was
a minister who did a great deal of traveling, always bringing things home for the children (The Henry Ford). Their mother was apparently responsible for stimulating them mechanically while their
father stimulated their intellect (The Henry Ford). What seems to have inspired the boys to become intrigued with the thought of flying was a toy that their father bought them
(The Henry Ford). It was "a toy helicopter-like top" (The Henry Ford). Another author illustrates that it was made from bamboo and cork and bamboo and that it possessed a
paper body (Gates). It was powered with rubber bands and the boys quickly broke the toy, because it was so fragile. But, that was the beginning of their fascination (Gates).
Interestingly enough, neither of these boys graduated from high school, both for different reasons however. Wilbur was a very good student and
would have graduated had the family not moved while he was in his senior year (The Henry Ford). In addition his mother contracted and illness, then death, and there was
a skating accident all of which combined to keep him from finishing school (The Henry Ford). Apparently the skating accident involved Wilbur being "hit...in the face with a bat while
...
