a Gentile, has to the book will probably be intense dislike of the father, Reb Smolinsky. Although his family is literally on the verge of starvation, he wont lift a
finger; instead, he remains in his room, where he occupies all his time in the study of Jewish religious texts (Yezierska). Since the family has only two rooms, this means
that Smolinskys wife and four daughters are crowded into one while he keeps the other entirely to himself (Yezierska). Not only does he refuse to share the space, on
the Sabbath "he alone eats the small portion of meat the family cant afford" (Bolton-Fasman). He is an "odious man who expects his wife and daughters to serve his every
whim" (Bolton-Fasman). If he were a native-born American, chances are that he would not enjoy being beholden to the women of his family for his livelihood, but since he is
an immigrant, still steeped in the ways of the shtetl, he feels that it is their duty to provide for him and has no problem taking their wages to support
himself, even as the rest of the family scrimps and saves and slips further into poverty. When one of the girls, Masha, spends thirty cents on herself, she is
looked at by the rest of the family with horror and disdain, even outright hatred. They are so poor they literally count every penny but instead of throwing her wages
