so all a paper this short can do is touch on a few points. We begin with the causes of the two wars. World War I is a strange
construct because it seems to have been fought largely because all the European nations decided it was time to fight; that is, its difficult to find a cause for the
conflict that makes any kind of rational sense. The best explanation is that it was the result of constantly rising tensions in Europe coupled with an increased sense of nationalism.
The causes of the first war are more political than humanitarian, the result of a system of secret alliances among the European powers ("Causes of World War I"). As
tensions escalated, Europe split into two opposing camps, and because of the alliances, nations were committed to support their allies even if they didnt agree with them, causing even more
tension ("Causes of World War I") Another cause of the war was the competition for colonies; still another was increasing militarism ("Causes of World War I"). "All the countries
within the hostile camps were building large armies and navies during the pre-war years" ("Causes of world War I"). As a result, there arose a class of professional officers who
"tended to dominate the civil authorities" ("Causes of World War I"). In addition, all the belligerent nations had mobilization plans drawn up far in advance of the actual conflict, just
waiting for the signal to start moving troops ("Causes of World War I"). There is a certain weight to the argument that when such things exist, the tendency is to
