it easier for all countries to access international markets. This can be seen as advantageous for countries where there are greater international difficulties as the WTO seeks to reduce barriers
and regulate international trade with basic rules and regulations, where an objective approach is taken to all issues and supposedly giving all countries equal access to international markets. The idea
may be seen as noble, but the reality is different, there are advantages created, but there are also problems which may be argued as necessitating reform. The aspect of
trade and the open markets has resulted in the disbanding of some agreements where there was some protection provided to developing countries that did not have the same ability to
compete as more developed nations. There are many examples if we look at a recent example of the way the countries have sought to help the development of former colonies
and help them become competitive. There were some agreements set up between the European Union with preferential trading agreements set up with the African, Caribbean and Pacific regions (ACPs) (Clark,
2002). As a part of these arrangements the bananas would be imported free of duty into the European countries concerned (Clark, 2002). The aim of this treatment was to enable
the ACP countries to become more competitive with the Latin American banana producers who were able to produce goods at a lower rate due to the higher capital that had
been invested by many US companies such as Chiquita and Dole (Clark, 2002). The problem is that the favourable trade agreements were not permissible under World Trade Organisation (WTO) regulations
