History of the Twenty-first Century", three-time Pulitzer Prize winner and "New York Times" foreign affairs columnist Thomas L. Friedman delves into the subject of globalization and how it is affecting
our world. Friedman emphasizes the complex foreign policy and economic issues that go hand-in-hand with twenty-first century globalization. He also emphasizes the individual empowerment that goes along with
that globalization, the entrepreneurial opportunities that are arising and their effects on world poverty. By reading Friedmans book, however, we come to recognize that globalization is neither an entirely
positive nor an entirely negative phenomenon. It is a mixture of both. Friedman (8) warns, in fact, that not only do those working in computers and information get
empowered in this new flat world but so do less positive entities like al-Qaeda and other terrorists. He cautions that the result of the playing field being leveled is
not just the empowerment of innovation but also the superempowerment of: "a whole new group
of angry, frustrated, and humiliated men and women" (Friedman 8). The title of Friedmans book
relates to the misperceptions Columbus dispelled in the fifteenth century. His trip across the seas led him to the Americas. Although he was in search of the East
Indies, Columbus had indeed validated the fact that the world was round not flat as most of his time presumed. Friedmans title "The World is Flat", however, emphasizes that
