Rye, and the stories "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut", and "A Perfect Day for Banana Fish". Salingers characters are alienated from their families, and they unable or unwilling
to become happy adults. They are obsessed with death. Catcher in the Rye: J. D. Salinger wrote Catcher in the Rye in
1945. The main character in this book is Holden Caulfield. The story takes place over a three day time period, but Holden talks much of his family and
his experiences, while in a hospital Holden left his home and his family. Although Holdens father is quite wealthy, he is also quite
busy. Holden and his father do not appear to share many experiences. The lack of affection from his father has a profound effect on Holdens life. There
are some psychologists that might say that Holden fails in his school work in order to gain the attention of his father, and possibly to command his fathers love.
"We wonder whether or not Holden is keeping himself from feeling too strongly about things; or is he, perhaps, afraid to
feel strong emotions? We may also speculate whether his indifference to peoples opinions is not actually a means of hiding his fear that they wont like him" (Monarch).
Holden is saturated in alienation. "Holden often searches for feelings; he tries to affect sadness at leaving places, usually without success" (Monarch).
