accustomed. Franklin began his Hollywood career as a young adult and graduated into bit parts on many different variety shows in past decades. The current Carl Franklin
though is now a noted film director and has even dabbled in writing screenplays as was evidenced by the film Devil in a Blue Dress which he both adapted for
the screen and directed. Franklin is truly a multifaceted film professional and it is very interesting to note the progress he has made in his career. For years
Franklin worked no more than in bit parts on television and now the acclaim which he receives for his films skyrockets him to another level. It is indeed interesting
to view Carl Franklin in terms of his critical reception. Devil in a Blue Dress is one such example (Ebert, 2002). Critics have fawned over this film and have
praised the efforts and achievements of Franklin (Ebert, 2002). According to Roger Ebert, "but here he creates a rich atmospheric style, a mood; the characters do not stand on
their own so much as inhabit places within a traditional frame" (Ebert, 2002). Ebert goes on to compare this film with another Franklin film titled One False Move and
names this "one of the great recent crime movies" (Ebert, 2002). Devil in a Blue Dress references a theme, subject and time period which are all dear to Franklin
and often evident in his films (Ebert, 2002). It is interesting to note how many reviewers of Franklins films seem almost surprised at his contributions (Frazer, 2002).
Many remember his humble Hollywood beginnings and are taken aback at the fresh talent which they now see emerging (Frazer, 2002).
