women would cook it. Thousands of years later, the paradigm that some say is a social construction seems all too biologically based, primarily because of its staying power. If in
fact gender roles were prescribed, why has it endured for so long, at least up until the twentieth century. Even early in the twentieth century, women longed to stay home,
within the context of the white picket fence and bake pies. At least that is what it appears on 1950s shows like Father Knows Best. All seemed to be well
before the feminist movement took the world by storm in the 1960s. Of course, prior to that time, there was a feminist movement, that had gotten stronger since the latter
part of the nineteenth century. Even so, women continue to be oppressed in a variety of ways and they continue to hang on to roles that have been prescribed for
some time. Admittedly, some of the reason for the plight of women is biological. She is generally smaller, weaker and she is the only one who bears children and
can feed them from her own body. She can be raped. She can do or endure all of these things due to how she is physically made. These are all
things that do not concern the man who is basically free to do as he likes. And while there are biological differences in respect to gender, it is also true
