powerful movements in Canadas history. It was, as one would assume, a time of struggle and controversy as women worked incredibly hard to gain rights for themselves and for future
generations of women. The following paper examines two particular articles which analyze different aspects of the womens suffrage movement of Canada. Votes for Women In one particular article,
"The Votes for Women Movement" by Paul Voisey the author provides us with information regarding the early days of Saskatchewan and Alberta. While the article obviously discusses voting rights for
women in Canada, it goes back in time to discuss the movement that led to the voting rights. The author starts by indicating that the right to vote was "part
of a political movement which was world wide in scope and cannot be interpreted as a protest movement fostered solely by local circumstances. At the same time, the origins of
the movement and its major thrust were firmly rooted in conditions largely peculiar to a frontier society" (Voisey, 1975; 10). This presents us with an intriguing perspective that speaks of
far more than just a womens suffrage movement but rather of a natural occurrence, or struggle, that was quite necessary for the region in Canada under examination by Voisey.
The region was comprised of mainly men, and most often young men who were less than perfect citizens. There was, according to many, a great number of men who were
gamblers, and also a great number of houses of prostitution. This led to many people desiring to change the condition of much of Canada, looking for more righteous activities in
the lives of young men, and surely more religion. In addition, those women who did live in the regions, women who were married, were often the victims of this wild
