close to commanding the highest positions in government. In any event, women have been integral to the development of the United States. While they have not been as successful as
men in general, and had to get past many road blocks, women have broken through the glass ceiling that is so often discussed. A student writing on this subject claims
that the road to women gaining particular rights is complicated, and is a journey that is aligned with inconsistencies. The student asks: "How did some women acquire rights and why
did other women get marginalized on the way? What group of women was not included in this Women Rights Movements?" First, it is important to examine
the womens rights movement, how the primary movement as it has come to be known began, and what it had done to change society. Many people view Abigail Adams
as relevant to the start of the womens suffrage movement in America. There were of course other relevant feminists such as Mary Wollstonecraft. During the 1790s, Wollstonecraft claimed that
the transformation of the family would be the "key to the morally and religiously progressive transformation of society and politics at large" (Hunt 81). Later on, feminism would hold that
the home was not the center of the womans world. At that time however, women were not ready to give up family life. Arguably, some women continue to cling to
family life, and also, choice would be a more important issue down the road. Still, during the beginning of the movement it is understandable that women describe significant change.
Feminism was in its infancy during the time of the Enlightenment. Yet, during the 1800s, it became increasingly important in America that women were allowed to vote.
